Grace Dowdeswell wins Raleigh and Argos bike design competition
Grace, nine years old from Bedfont, Middlesex, came up with her design following a competition with high street chain Argos in 2011. Her skeleton-themed artwork was chosen as the winning design by the Raleigh UK judging panel and has now gone into production to be sold exclusively by Argos.
Chris Billingham, Argos Sports and Cycles Buyer explains: “We ran the competition on our website and were overwhelmed with the number of entries. We picked the 10 best designs from 550 submissions and asked Raleigh to pick the bike the eventual winner.”
Raleigh’s Jayne Bakes, kid’s bike product manager, continues: “Grace’s skeleton-themed ‘Biskull’ received a unanimous thumbs up from the Raleigh judging panel. With her clear illustrations and imaginative design we are confident that the bike will sell well in the kid’s bike market this Christmas.”
Grace not only received her own personalized 24” wheel version of the Biskull, a decorated cake and Team Raleigh goodies but also got the chance to work with top Raleigh bike designer Sophie Widdowson to see her vision come to life.
Grace’s parents Steve and Maria Dowdeswell accompanied her to Raleigh’s site in Nottingham where she was presented with the bike by Team Raleigh-GAC rider Simon Holt and team manager Cherie Pridham.
Maria, Grace’s Mum said: “Grace has always been sporty and creative so this design competition really caught her imagination. Art, Design and Technology is her favourite lesson at Staines Prep School so it was no surprise to us that she came up with something so creative.”
The Biskull (featured below) will be sold in Argos stores from September and will be featured in the Argos 2012 Christmas gift guide.
